Beginning in 2004, FRESH has been transforming the food system in New London. With a focus on youth development, FRESH spends a lot of their time educating youth to become aware of how important it is to eat healthy, local food.
Since its inception, FRESH has established many programs. This includes an educational program for youth - beginning as young as age 5! There is a 1-acre teaching farm in Waterford, various community gardens throughout New London, and a multitude of opportunities for youth to learn and develop skills to become leaders in their communities.
In 2005, the FRESH Market was established, and has distributed over 30,000 pounds of produce since. To further develop this, they have also started a Mobile Market which travels around New London to different spots. It is important to note that, according to their website, FRESH sets the price on their organic produce at 50% less than large supermarkets.
Additionally, FRESH produces a seasonal newsletter full of news in the community, FRESH market updates, volunteer spotlights, youth profiles, and staff postings. Another interesting part of the site is the youth-generated media, where youth in the program have their own blog full of photos and videos.
