If you have the space on your property, building an outdoor oven is a great way to make your home more sustainable. It can also be a huge life saver if you loose power at your house (long gone are the days of eating junk foods packed with preservatives to last you until you regain power!). Also if you are a fan of Shiitake mushrooms, you will be delighted to hear they are failry easy to grow in Connecticut! 

Cynthia and Suart Rabinowitz of The Hidden Garden and Connsoil, LLC/Center for Sustainability will be presenting on both topics at the 2014 Winter Conference on March 1, 2014 at Western Connecticut State University. 



If having an outdoor oven has always been a dream of yours, but become overwhlemed with the construction details, you are in luck! The Building and Using Cobb Ovens and Other Outdoor Cookstoves  workshop will explain the methods of constructing an outdoor oven using Cobb construction techniques. Atendees will also learn about other simple outdoor cookstoves which can be made with easily obtained materials. Cynthia and Stuart will also discuss how to operate and cook in these ovens and stoves.

Cynthia and Stuart will also be sharing their experiences with shiitake mushrooms during their workshop on What We've Learned About Growing Shitaake Mushrooms. This workshop will give detailed instructions on inoculating logs with commercially purchased mushroom spores, and how to handle the logs during the first year and after. They will share their own method of handling the logs and forcing the mushrooms to flush prolifically.
