The grass is always GREENER on the other side

Do you savor those special times when you get to cook yourself a tender, juicy filet mignon? If you
have these carnivorous cravings from time to time but find yourself at a crossroads with the
problems that USDA infrastructure for slaughter and processing present, come down to our Winter Conference on March 1st to attend Michael Keilty and Jean C. King's workshop on the importance of sustainable perennial agriculture!

The USDA SARE All Year Long project is providing knowledge that deals with local meat
production, processing and marketing in Southern New England in the hopes of spreading awareness over a variety of issues including: sustainable grazing practices, pasture management and infrastructure, techniques for year round meat production, the importance of local grass fed meat, livestock processing opportunities and many more. This project supports sustainable perennial agriculture versus row crop agriculture.  Within sustainable perennial agriculture, animals feed on grass in a pasture or stored grass
which minimizes animal confinement, focuses on the humane treatment of animals and also reduces the use of biocides.

Michael Keilty is currently a UCONN Sustainable Agriculture research assistant, the Project Coordinator for the SARE PDP project on the grass fed All Year Long initiative and is also the owner of Maple Spring Farm in Morris, CT.
